"The things we’re anxious to see restored are craftsmanship, human energy, a concern with the quality of whatever is being done, and the sort of long-range thinking that involves people in pride-creating endeavors."

Spring 2007 - WEST GREENLAND STYLE SEA KAYAK

with ANDREW MALCOMB

A West Greenland-style sea kayak built with Canadian-born boatbuilder Andrew Malcomb.

Built using Alaskan yellow cedar with oak dowels and artificial sinew lashings. There are no fasteners or glue, and all boats are custom to each builder. These boats move FAST, are very seaworthy, and provide an intimate experience with the sea. They are designed to be recreational boats, not expedition boats.

Summer 2007 - TRADITIONAL SKIN ON FRAME KAYAK BUILDING COURSE with BRIAN SCHULZ

Traditional kayak builder Brian Schulz guest-hosted a kayak building class at Atlantic Challenge. The kayaks he builds are Skin on Frame--a light wooden skeleton covered with a waterproof nylon skin. These are the modern descendants of the Eskimo hunting kayaks.

Each student built their own kayak and paddle custom fitted to their size and paddling needs. The project was fun and easy. The result, a beautiful, seaworthy boat that is incredibly lightweight and surprisingly durable.
